Thirteen dogs catch mice

  The dog fetches the mouse.

Sleepless at night, the sound of alarm clocks and ambulance sirens is like a symphony in my ears.

When I got up, my head was heavy and my feet were light, with a slight low blood sugar reaction. I poured myself a cup of warm water and walked to the window with the teacup in hand. I found that downstairs was brightly lit, with people crowded at the entrance guard station. The flashing lights of the police car were very eye-catching, and on the other side, an ambulance was also parked.

  What's wrong?

Because I live in a small high-rise, standing for a while can't see the situation. At a glance from a skewed angle, I saw a black shadow sitting in a wheelchair, and my mind reflexively recalled the scene not long ago, feeling a bit embarrassed. Almost immediately, the other party's gaze swept over, because his face was hidden in the dark, his expression was unclear, but it felt strange to be stared at by him.

Fortunately, it was only a brief glance and he rolled away in his wheelchair to leave the balcony. I pushed open the window and called out without thinking: "Hey, wait!" Successfully catching his attention again, he turned his head sideways, his tone seemingly displeased: "I'm not 'hey'."

"Ah, I knew you were a Gao, your mother didn't tell me your name."

A reluctant voice came after a moment of silence: "Gao Cheng." The wheels rolled, and the figure disappeared from the balcony. A gust of cold wind hit me in the face, sending shivers down my spine. I wanted to ask questions but they didn't come out... All I could do was close the window with a sullen expression.

The next morning, as soon as I stepped out of the door, I saw several people walking towards me from the elevator. Except for a little girl, there were two others wearing deep blue police uniforms. Our eyes met, and one of them took the lead in walking towards me with a smile: "Going to the gallery downstairs?"

I nodded and smiled, the well-dressed man in front of me was indeed a police officer from Gaochengkou. The lily flowers I received on my birthday two days ago were also sent by him. I glanced behind him and asked softly, "What's going on here..."

"Oh, right, Xia Zhu, you're a resident on this floor, do you know if there's another household with a young man around 1.8 meters tall, good-looking? Hmm, he has slightly long hair and wears a black outfit."

Doesn't the person he described sound a bit like Gao Cheng?

A faint cry of surprise came: "Ah! I saw her walking with that brother yesterday evening!" As soon as the voice fell, all eyes turned to me, and the little girl stretched out her hand and pointed directly at me.

Two minutes later, standing in front of the neighbor's door, Xu Jianglun asked: "Is it this house?" I nodded slightly hesitantly, still feeling inexplicable. Xu Jianglun said that according to the vague directions given by the little girl, they had been asking from household to household on the first floor until they reached my floor. Nothing specific was mentioned, just that they were looking for someone.

The doorbell rang for a long time, but there was no movement. Xu Jianglun had to knock on the door again, but still no one came to answer. "Xia Zhu, do you have his phone number?" Xu Jianglun turned around and asked me.

I pursed my lips, my throat slightly dry, "Yes."

Woken up in the wee hours, I met him at the window. After lying down for a few minutes, I heard my phone had an SMS. I took it out and looked, surprisingly, one message was from Gao Cheng. When did he put his phone number into my phone's address book?

Opened the message, couldn't help but feel embarrassed.

Standard high castle tone: slow reaction and dull response, you are a turtle, identification complete.

Are you mocking me? I retorted without hesitation: Those who take things without asking are thieves.

His response was quick and brief: Ha!

I can almost imagine his expression at that time was raised eyebrows and a sarcastic smile.

I came back to my senses and, in front of the police, had no choice but to dial his number. The ringtone was an English song that I'd never heard before, it rang for a long time before finally connecting, a low, muffled voice said "Who?"

He replied in a low voice: "It's me." But then he heard an impolite counter-question from the other side: "Who are you?"

Xu Jianglun asked beside me, "Let me talk to him." I had no choice but to hand over the phone, and he directly turned on the speakerphone. "Hello, this is Xu Jianglun, a police officer from Qingcheng District. I'm outside your house, please open the door immediately."

"Outside the house? I'm not at home now, where can I open the door for you?" The lazy tone was accompanied by a stuffy nasal sound.

Everyone looked at each other in dismay, seeing the cold-faced policeman next to Xu Jianglun about to get angry. I hastily said: "Gao Cheng, stop messing around and come out to open the door!" After thinking for a moment, I added another sentence: "Otherwise, I'll call your mom."

This remark was followed by several obvious glances at me, which made even myself feel embarrassed. The tone of voice was like that used to scold a disobedient child. Seeing Xu Jianglun wanting to speak but hesitating, I quickly explained: "His mother is my landlady, and before returning to her hometown, she entrusted me with taking good care of him."

A mocking laugh came from my phone, followed by Gao Cheng's disdainful tone: "Xia Zhu, you really are a dog catching a mouse." He then hung up the phone, leaving only a clear busy tone that was especially piercing to the ear.

Biting back his teeth, he couldn't show any expression on his face, and this kid was sarcastically telling him to mind his own business.
