Chapter 4 Midnight Horror

  Chapter 4 Midnight Terror

That strange sound was very small, at least compared to the loud snoring sound of Da Zhuang. Although that strange sound seemed particularly small, I still clearly heard the eerie "thud thud" sound.

No way, I won't really run into that thing, will I? I cursed inwardly, this is something nobody wants to encounter, something they've never known before.

I hastily got up and pushed Da Zhuang awake, who rubbed his sleepy eyes after being woken by me. Just as he was about to complain, I covered his mouth with one hand and signaled him to be quiet with a hiss. Then I listened intently to the sounds outside the door.

At this time, the duty room was exceptionally quiet, with only a faintly lit oil lamp illuminating the space. I leaned against the door and listened to the sounds in the corridor, and that "thud" sound seemed like a small hammer pounding my heart one beat at a time.

Looking at me, Da Zhuang felt very amused and was about to call out to me when the "dada" sound suddenly grew louder. The whole duty room heard it clearly, as if the "dada" sound was coming from just outside the door. I suddenly dodged away from the doorway.

Suddenly, Da Zhuang shouted "Who", but there was no response from outside the door, and it was still the sound of 'drip drip'.

Next to the wooden door of the duty room, there were two windows on top of that wall. Those windows could see everything outside, and people who usually stayed in the duty room also used this window to look at people coming in from the entrance. At this time, I plucked up my courage and walked towards the window. To say that I was not afraid would be a lie. Seeing me about to walk to the side of the window, Da Zhuang was even faster than me. Since the bed was closest to the window, Da Zhuang reached the windowsill with just one move.

Dazhuang's eyes widened and he took a glance outside, only to hear a "Oh no!" and Dazhuang immediately withdrew his head like lightning. I didn't know what Dazhuang saw by the window, so I leaned my head over to take a look, but all I saw was a white thing flashing before my eyes for a moment before disappearing. However, that white thing also gave me quite a scare.

As the white thing flashed outside the window, the "dada" sound also gradually became smaller and farther away. I turned my head to look at Dashuai, who was panting heavily with his mouth open, as if he had just experienced something earth-shattering.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at Da Zhuang, who was still in a state of shock, and asked, "Da Zhuang, what did you just see?" Seeing me sit down next to him and ask, Da Zhuang took two deep breaths, composed himself, and said, "Damn it, what the hell was that thing? It scared the crap out of me!" Clearly, Da Zhuang must have seen something, or he wouldn't be like this. Da Zhuang is usually very brave and doesn't believe in supernatural things, so whatever it was that could scare him like this must be something terrifying.

"What on earth is that thing? Tell me what you see." I was extremely curious about this thing, having only heard Grandpa mention it before, but never actually seeing it for myself.

Dazhuang's eyes widened as he stared at me and said, "Damn it, little comrade, that thing is not human. I think we should retreat, this job isn't suitable for us." As he spoke, Dazhuang rarely showed a terrified expression, which was something I had never seen before in the past. It was clear that what Dazhuang saw had really scared him.

As for what Da Zhuang said, I couldn't make out four or five words. I could only tell that what he saw must have been extremely terrifying, but the more it was like this, the more curious I became and the more I wanted to know what it was. However, from Da Zhuang's mouth, I couldn't dig up anything. It wasn't that this kid had poor expressive abilities. "I only caught a glimpse of that thing." When I heard Da Zhuang say this, I couldn't help but feel that this kid was even more tense than me, and his conditioned reflexes were so strong.

Suddenly, I had an idea to go and take a look at what that thing was. Thinking of this, I patted Da Zhuang's shoulder "How about we go and take a look?" Hearing my words, Da Zhuang hastily shrunk back "You still want to go and take a look? I'm not even done running away, the further I can get from that ghostly thing the better, I don't want to get involved with any ghostly things."

"Hey? Dazhuang, you little rascal, as sturdy as a cow, what are you afraid of? Besides, aren't you an atheist? What's got you so flustered? Maybe what you saw just now was someone pretending to be ill to scare us two young comrades?"

After hearing my words, Da Zhuang rolled his eyes and obviously felt the same possibility. "Alright then, I'll take a look at what that thing is. If it's a patient, I'll hang him up and beat him, damn it, dare to scare me." As he spoke, he clenched his fists.

Seeing Da Zhuang like this, I hastily picked up the oil lamp "Let's go." After finishing speaking, I opened the door and walked out, and Da Zhuang also followed me out.

The corridor was a dull greenish color, and even though the hospital had installed lights on each floor, their brightness only allowed people to see things two or three meters away in the corridor, which wasn't much different from not having them at all.

I walked out of the duty room with an oil lamp, and under its light I could only see things within five meters. Anything further away was just a vague outline. Suddenly, I felt something on my shoulder, and when I turned around, I saw a huge face. I quickly dodged to the side, and then I realized what was behind me - it was that big lummox Dazhuang. Just a moment ago, we were walking shoulder to shoulder, but somehow he had ended up following right behind me.

"What are you hiding from, you little brat?" Before I could even speak, Da Zhuang was already displeased.

"Hey, what are you doing standing behind me and putting your hand on my shoulder?"

Dazhuang rubbed his hands together, "I just wanted to ask you how you found that thing. It's pitch black here, and with only your lantern, I wouldn't be following behind you if I didn't have to."

It wasn't until then that I finally understood, Dazhuang was actually asking me how to find that thing and put his hand on me, but just as he was about to pat me, I didn't realize it was him due to my conditioned reflex.

"Let's go find it along with the sound, we definitely will." I paused and said "Also, next time you can just call me directly, don't be so nervous, I thought someone was going to sneak up on me." As I spoke, I walked towards the direction of the strange sound.

As I listened to the "drip, drip" sound, I felt a chill run down my spine. In such a gloomy and quiet hospital corridor, that eerie "drip, drip" sound was enough to scare someone half to death. Although the sound was small, it seemed particularly clear in this silent corridor. I held the oil lamp and walked ahead, while Da Zhuang followed behind me, and we continued on like this, one in front of the other.

The lamps at the top of the wall corners in this hospital were installed several years ago. After several years of weathering, many of them have become somewhat unsteady and flicker on and off as if they might go out at any moment. The already gloomy corridor now seems even more ominous with the faint greenish glow, the hissing sound of the flashing lights, and the "drip drip" noise.

"I think we should go." As I walked, Da Zhuang's voice came from behind me, and his voice actually trembled slightly.

"We're getting closer to that sound, and once we see what's making it, we'll leave." I said, turning back to look at Da Zhuang. By the light of the oil lamp, I saw that Da Zhuang's forehead was actually sweating, showing just how tense he was right now.

After hearing what I said, Da Zhuang reluctantly nodded in agreement with my idea, and we immediately quickened our pace towards the source of the sound.

As the sound got closer and closer, my heart was about to jump out of my throat. After walking for about two or three minutes, I arrived at a crossroads, and the sound came from the left corridor. I looked to the left, that corridor was built in a gentle slope, it seemed to be a corridor leading to the underground warehouse.

I steeled myself and walked down the corridor, taking a few steps before turning another corner. Before I could continue walking, relying on the light of the oil lamp, I barely made out a slender figure in the distance, whose feet seemed to be floating above the ground. Seeing this, I couldn't help but feel extremely shocked. This scene was something I had only ever seen in stories my grandfather used to tell me, and yet now I was actually seeing it with my own eyes.

At this time, my tension had brought my heart to my throat. I took a deep breath and suppressed the urge to run away immediately. I whispered "Dazhuang, let's get closer..." Before I could finish speaking, I felt a strong force hitting my back...
