Chapter Fifty-two

  Chapter Fifty-two

The wedding was still in progress, Su Jiner quietly thought about her concerns, and had unknowingly drunk many cups of tea. Lin Yuan and the others didn't know what she was thinking, they just looked at her furrowed brow with concern.

Chu Fei occasionally glanced over at them, his eyebrows never relaxing for a moment. The red wedding attire made him look even more handsome and dashing.

  "Rites completed——"

Su Jiner looked up and then lowered her head again. What era was this, still using such an old-fashioned ceremony? She wanted to laugh, but the twitching corners of her mouth made it impossible for her to smile at all. The hand placed on the table was exceptionally cold.

Chu Fei Fan and Ah Lian were sent into a room, Su Jin Er felt her eyes getting moist, she weakly raised the corners of her mouth, but the corners of her mouth were bitter.

Even if she knew he was forced, even if she knew he liked her, still, the distress in her heart was like a rising tide that drowned her. She wanted to drink water to cover up her distress, but accidentally choked on it and started coughing violently.

Lin Yuan patted her back, but didn't know how to comfort her. If she were in his shoes, she wouldn't be able to bear it and would either run away or make a big fuss. But Su Jinye continued to smile at him, even though she knew exactly how much pain and distress he was in.

Su Jin's face was also flushed bright red from coughing.

After a while, Chu Feifan and Ah Lian came out. Ah Lian had already lifted her red veil, smiling brightly as she held onto Chu Feifan's arm to greet everyone. Su Jin'er felt that the rosy glow on Ah Lian's face was like needles piercing her eyes.

Chu Fei's back was stiff as he toasted the crowd, his smile at the corner of his mouth even stiffer. He seemed to have forgotten all other expressions. His eyes kept glancing over here, wanting to catch Su Jiner's expression, no matter how slight it might be. But what she saw was only her smiling mouth and completely nonchalant gaze.

The wedding finally came to an end, and the sky gradually darkened. They were sent back to the small black house again. Su Jin'er lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, with Chu Fei Fan's red clothes and the bride's red dress constantly appearing in her mind. She tried to pretend that she didn't care, but she couldn't deceive her own heart.

She closed her eyes, wanting to rest for a while, but her mind was uncontrollably chaotic, and she herself couldn't figure out what it was.

Zuo Yi used his eyes to hint at Lin Yuan, and Lin Yuan helplessly spread out his hands to indicate that he couldn't do anything.

Su Jin'er opened her eyes, and she wondered what was wrong with herself, why she was feeling sentimental about emotions she had never truly experienced before. How could she forget the purpose of coming here?

She sat up and looked at Zuo Yi saying: "Chu Fei Fan said yesterday that they were worshiping the gods, right?"

Zuo Yi and Lin Yuan looked at her suspiciously and said, "What's wrong? Is there a problem?"

"He also said that after the wedding is over, the village chief will let us go, right?"

The three of them nodded again, unable to understand what she was thinking.

"Now I'm really curious why they use a living person's heart to worship the gods, are you curious?" Su Jiner said with a mysterious smile.

A few people looked more puzzled, but they still nodded.

"Let's go out and take a look! Maybe we can find something."

"But are we going out?" Lin Yuan looked at the tightly locked door and said, although he didn't know what she was going to do, but it's much better than letting her suffer alone.

Su Jiner took out a key and said, "Stolen today."

Several people were shocked to the point of almost dropping their jaws, no one had expected that Su Jin'er would actually steal the key, everyone was worried that she would be sad, but she actually had the mood to steal the key, it seemed they still didn't understand her well enough.

Su Jiner walked to the edge of the door, pulled it open, revealing a gap in between. Her slender hand stretched out and slowly opened the lock, then triumphantly winked at them.

The sky had completely darkened, and the villagers were still celebrating. The bonfires almost illuminated the entire sky, with people dancing around them. Chufan was also stiffly dancing with his new bride, while no one noticed that several people were secretly trying to escape.

The cold night wind blew on their bodies as they ran and hid, finally escaping the view of the four people who leaned against a large stone, panting heavily. The cool air entered their throats, feeling like a fire was burning, dry and sore.

"Cough cough! Did we make it out?" Lin Yuan asked with a cough.

"Run... I've run out of breath, but where should we go?" Zuo Yi panted, patting his chest. It had been a long time since he'd run such a long distance, and it was uphill to boot.

"I didn't say I was leaving!" Su Jin'er lay on the stone, looking at the people below who were still celebrating, her eyes dazed: "Next, it's our turn to counterattack."

"What are we going to counterattack with...?" Lin Yuan's words were left unfinished as he stared at the forest in terror.

"Why didn't you say anything?" Su Jiner turned around, just wanting to say something else, but her voice was stuck in her throat.

  What is it?

In the woods, a man was hanging from a tree, his body covered in blood. His upper and lower torso were almost completely severed, held together by only a thin strip of muscle. His intestines were exposed through his stomach, still slowly writhing. A large hole gaped in the area of his heart, empty and devoid of a heart. Yet, he was smiling, his bloody face turned towards them with a silent laugh.

Zuo Yi and Ge Yaze had never encountered such a thing before. They looked at the "person" who was no longer human with terror, their chests heaving violently.

In this dark and eerie forest, anyone who saw such a thing would be frightened to death. The person who should have died was smiling at them, smiling so that it made one's hair stand on end, the smiling person almost went mad.

Su Jin'er turned her head to look down, wanting to ask for help, but the people celebrating below had unknowingly dispersed at some point, even the bonfire had been extinguished, as if no one had ever existed there before. The surrounding sky was pitch black, and nothing could be seen.

  No!

  What's wrong with this place?

Su Jiner mustered up the courage to look at that terrifying "person" again. It was so dark around them, but why could they see the "person" in the woods clearly? Even the intestines wriggling were visible.

"Xiao Yuan, what did you see?" She squatted down and asked in a low voice. After the last time they met in the dormitory, she knew that she had to remain calm and must not fall into the enemy's trap.

"I... I saw... a person whose body was split in two, yet still smiling at us."

Ge Yaze and Zuo Yi both nodded.

A chill wind suddenly blew over, and they couldn't help but shiver. Su Jin'er stared tightly at the "person", and was shocked to discover that the distance between them was slowly shrinking, but she hadn't seen him move at all.

Fear made her tremble constantly, was her idea wrong? Was that "person" really that thing?

Zuo Yi wanted to get up, but his body was stiff and couldn't move at all, his bones creaking "creak" sounds.

The distance was getting closer, and the smile on his face grew bigger. His mouth had already split open, and his teeth fell out in an instant as his jaw dropped wide open. A mouthful of fresh blood flowed down from the cracked corners of his mouth, and the muscles on his face slowly split apart, falling off piece by piece to reveal rows of white bones.

They wanted to escape, but their bodies had no strength at all. They wanted to close their eyes and not look at it, but found that they couldn't even close their own eyes, and could only stare blankly as the terrifying thing slowly approached them, slowly driving them into desperation.

Sweat had penetrated their clothes, and the cold wind made them even colder.

Su Jiner's fingers were stiffly curved, her finger bones numb from the force, but she was as if she had been struck by a acupuncture point and couldn't move an inch.

Breathing is getting more and more urgent, next second, heart may jump out of mouth, then lose all consciousness.

A low sobbing sound suddenly came from the woods, as if someone was crying and suppressing their own cries.

"Why must you rip out my heart? Give me back my life—"

  A shrill and desperate cry.

Then a shrill noise came from around, like the sound of fingernails scratching glass, stimulating every weak nerve of theirs.

They covered their ears in agony.

"Are we collectively hallucinating or is all of this real?" Gao Yazhe said painfully, he had always been dealing with corpses, only knowing that the dead would tell him things that the living wouldn't, but he had never encountered a corpse seeking revenge before, which made it unthinkable to him.

At this point, he was only one meter away from them. He stretched out his blood-filled hand, and if he moved forward just a little bit more, he would be able to touch Lin Yuan's neck. Lin Yuan looked at the "person" in front of him with terror, his mouth wide open, but unable to make any sound, and could only breathe in the air filled with the smell of blood.

Just as those hands were about to touch Lin Yuan's neck, a burst of light suddenly shone over.

Everything in front of them disappeared instantly, their heavy breathing, the air still had a bloody smell, Lin Yuan vomited on the ground, her face full of tears, just now it was just a little bit, she would have been killed by that terrible thing.

As the light drew near, they saw that it was a villager, and when they saw them, Su Jin'er felt a lot more at ease. At least they were of the same kind as themselves, not some ferocious and frightening creature.

Su Jiner stood up, her calf numb from the long period of stiffness. She bent down and rubbed it hard before helping Lin Yuan up from the ground. This village was hiding too many secrets, and it seemed to be targeting her specifically. If that was indeed the case, then even if she didn't investigate, these things would still find their way to her on their own. It was just a pity for her friends, who would have to follow her and experience the shocks together.

They followed the villagers back to the village, Su Jin'er sat quietly in the chair, while Lin Yuan was still feeling fearful about what had just happened, Zuo Yi was scolding himself for being a coward, regretting that he should have rushed up and given that fake spiritual person two punches, Ge Yaze just smiled helplessly.

Su Jiner looked at Zuo Yi and said, "Don't scold yourself anymore. Whoever encounters such a thing will be terrified, and no one would believe it's a person." After a pause, she continued, "I'm thinking now that those villagers were originally celebrating, how did they suddenly disperse completely, without even leaving a spark behind? What's even stranger is, how did they find us?"

Su Jiner's words calmed down Zuo Yi, who furrowed his brow and said: "If you hadn't mentioned it, I really wouldn't have noticed. At that time, the surroundings were pitch black, so why could we see that thing clearly? And yet we saw it so clearly?"

"Yes, I was thinking about this too." Gao Yaze said, stroking his chin.

"Maybe it's really a ghost." Lin Yuan said in a hushed tone.
