Chapter 12: Zombie Man

  Murder Bureau within Bureau

I have an idea. I told Panzi that during the day, we can still get along with Lu Yifeng, but at night, we must be more careful and not fall into his trap.

Pan nodded in agreement, and then came up with another idea. From today on, we'll divide the night into two shifts, upper and lower night, with 1 am as the boundary. Each shift will have one person sleeping while the other stays awake to "stand guard".

Last time when we decided who would teach Chinese and math, I let Panzi choose first. This time he returned the favor and let me choose first. After some thought, I found that the second half of the night was the most tiring, as people are especially sleepy before dawn. So I took a shortcut and said I'd take the post for the first half of the night.

It wasn't until evening that the little black dog came back from outside, still wanting to spend the night in the house. Lu Yifeng saw the black dog and overreacted, kicking it out with one foot. Originally, this dog was not raised by me, and last night when Panzi and I went to investigate the well, it was making trouble on the side, and I didn't care about it as it whined and barked outside the house.

It can also be seen that Lu Yifeng wanted to chat with us, but Panzi and I both showed a refusing attitude, so he didn't get the chance and lay down on his own bed. Panzi and I also lay down, and as agreed, I forced myself to stay awake and waited for the time to pass.

Lu Yifeng didn't make any big moves in the first half of the night and slept quite honestly. What's strange is Panzi, who almost snored like thunder when he was sleeping. He didn't have this problem before, I thought to myself, could it be that getting rained on during the day made his nose inflamed?

I glanced at my watch and waited until 1 am. I quietly got out of bed, walked to Panzi's bedside, and gently pulled him awake.

Pan Zi also knew it was time for him to take over the shift, waving his hand to signal me to hurry up and rest.

I'm not polite, since I had Lu Yu Feng, our rest time has become very tight. If I don't hurry up and sleep, tomorrow when I wake up, my whole person will definitely be dizzy.

In the second half of the night, I woke up when I turned over and actually took a casual glance at Lu Yifeng's bed.

But when I looked back, I found that the bed was empty. I was puzzled and thought, "Where did this guy go?" Did he get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet? I also glanced at Panzi's bed and found it was empty too.

All of a sudden, I was wide awake and sat up with a start. My first thought at the time was that something was wrong, Lu Yifeng was a human trafficker who had kidnapped Panzi in the middle of the night.

I looked around nervously and found someone standing at the door, who was stiff and formal, looking particularly out of place in this situation, and it was Panzi.

I rubbed my still sleepy head, got out of bed, walked towards Panzi and asked, "What are you doing? Where is Lu Yu Feng?"

Pan Zi didn't respond and didn't even bother to acknowledge me, still staring out the door.

I just wanted to walk over and turn him around, shouting his name in my mouth, "Pan Zi!"

This time Panzi reacted, he slowly turned around, staring at me with a pair of big eyes. His current expression is particularly terrifying, still hanging with a cold smile, especially his mouth was also opened, revealing two large canine teeth.

At this scene, I suddenly thought of a zombie, and I didn't know what to do. Facing such an unfamiliar Panzi, I cautiously retreated two steps back.

But as I walked away, Panzi wobbled along behind me, stretching out two paws, which is why I call them paws rather than hands, because they were curled up.

Pan's actions were very obvious, he wanted to choke me, the neck is the most critical part of a person's body, I would let him choke me, that's absurd.

Look at those two paws coming over, I quickly stretched out my hands as well, looking for an opportunity to grab them. I wasn't giving up yet, shaking him vigorously to wake him up.

Panzi didn't feel anything at all, and then let out a few more weird wails, rushing over to bite my neck.

This is clearly not the Panzi I knew. I steeled myself, quickly turned around, grabbed his hands firmly and pulled him backwards with force.

This is a move in free combat, used to throw people. Normally, Panzi would also know this move, he would definitely turn his body or use his knee to block me and not let me succeed. But now, he doesn't resist at all, letting me throw him into a big forward somersault.

I thought I'd wait for him to fall, and then quickly use my knee to press on his chest and hold him down. But before I could even do that, I found that Panzi had already been knocked unconscious, and was even shaking all over like a crab, with bubbles coming out of his mouth.

I let out a slight sigh of relief and quickly rummaged through my travel bag to pull out the rope, tying him up securely.

After a cigarette's time, Panzi woke up. He opened his eyes and stared at me, struggling for a while. Before I could ask him anything, he questioned me first. "Du Rui, why are you tying me up?"

I almost laughed at him and turned around to ask him, "Don't you know what you just did?"

Pan Zimeng became dazed and thought for a moment before saying, "I just had a dream, it seemed like we were fighting, and then you woke me up."

I said you're not just fighting, you even bit someone. I didn't hide it either, and told them what I saw earlier.

Pan Zina's expression was stunned, and it took a long time for her to come back to her senses.

Although I don't know if Panzi has mental problems or not, he is now normal and there's no need for me to keep him tied up on the ground suffering from the cold.

I loosened his bonds and asked again where Lu Yifeng had gone.

Pan Zi told me about his experience of being on night watch, actually he was originally awake and had been paying attention to Lu Yu Feng's situation, but didn't know how it happened that gradually he started to feel sleepy, although he pinched his thigh hard not to fall asleep, in the end he still fell asleep with his eyes closed.

Afraid I wouldn't believe him, he even deliberately took off his pants to let me see, and indeed there were a few bruises on them. I figured that since the facts had already happened, I couldn't blame him for anything.

I made Panzi get up and move around, then walked to the door and took a look outside. Now where Lu Yifeng went, I don't know, but his luggage is all on the bed, he can't have gone far.

I told Panzi, let's go out and find Lu Yifeng together.

Pan Zi heard that it was another midnight investigation, shook his head and sat back on the bed. But I thought to myself, if we don't investigate Lu Yufeng thoroughly, it's like having a time bomb by our side.

I didn't care whether Pan Zele was willing or not, I forcibly pulled him up and made him follow me with his knife.

We first went to the tile house opposite and took a look, there was no one inside, then we went around to the back and looked at the well, also empty. I thought, could it be that Lu Yu Feng has gone to find Liu Hui and the others?

Just as I was thinking of going to the cafeteria, Panzi pointed at the back mountain and told me to take a look.

I looked up and saw a bright spot on the mountain, twinkling on and off.

The entire hillside was uninhabited, and Liu Wei had specifically mentioned that this place was off-limits. Suddenly appearing like a bright spot, it made one involuntarily think of lonely spirits and wild ghosts.

But then I thought of another possibility, could it be Lu Yifeng? He went to the back mountain with a flashlight.

I came up with a burst of energy and took Panzi to the back mountain.

The environment behind the mountain and in the village is a bit different, especially the soil on the ground, which is soft and spongy, probably due to the accumulation of dry branches and leaves over time. My friend and I felt uncomfortable walking on it, as if we were stepping on fat meat. The air here also smells bad, with a pungent and astringent odor.

I gazed at that bright spot and estimated the distance, it should be about a mile away from us. As long as it doesn't move randomly, we'll walk for another moment, and we're sure to hit it.

Originally, I had planned it out well, but after we walked a bit further forward, that bright spot suddenly disappeared. Now I'm at a loss, and my goal is gone.

Pan Zi suggested we retreat and said, "Since that highlight is gone, why don't we head back?"

I also hesitated, especially since the wind in the back mountain was quite strong, blowing fiercely and making me break out in goosebumps from time to time. I rubbed my arms to warm myself up a bit, just thinking of telling Panzi to head back.

Before I could say anything, a rustling sound came from afar. The noise was quite strange, as if someone was walking through a pile of fallen leaves.

In front of me was still a sparse forest of small trees. I thought to myself, could it be that the bright spot has returned? And is it in the forest?

I urged Panzi to keep going and said let's move forward a bit more, no matter what we find, we'll stop here.

To prevent any unexpected surprises, we both took out our spring knives and didn't dare to turn on the flashlight. We crouched down and followed the source of the sound.

That rustling sound never stopped, the closer I got to it, my whole heart was lifted up, but I really didn't expect that when I turned around a small tree, I found out that this sound was made by that little black dog.

This little black dog was driven out of the house, but it's so bold that it ran to the back mountain by itself. Now it's digging at the roots of a tree and playing. It seems like there's something under the tree too. As it digs, it sticks its head in and takes two bites.

Seeing us coming, it wagged its tail and came over again, making a low humming noise as it circled around us.

I was completely bewildered and thought to myself that this black dog wasn't a firefly, so the bright spot shouldn't be coming from it.

Panzi didn't think much of it and upon seeing that it was a small black dog, he relaxed completely and even squatted down to pick it up.

It's no wonder that the two of us focused all our attention on this black dog, without noticing the surroundings, especially not seeing the person hiding in the small tree right next to us.

He crouched down low, originally squatting in a clump of branches, and suddenly made his move, swooping down with a whoosh, pouncing towards the two of us.
