Chapter 1: Rebirth of the Python
Lin Bei was startled awake by the successive cries and shouts coming from all around him.
"Has the long worm moved?"
"It seems like nothing has moved."
"Isn't he dead? He was buried several meters underground, shouldn't he be dead?"
"It's definitely not dead!! If it were dead, it would have rotted away long ago. Look at this long worm, its skin is so smooth and thick. How could it be dead? It must be hibernating."
"Then he was killed immediately."
"Don't hit it, such a big long worm, it's probably become a monster, hitting it might bring disaster."
Lin Bei is now in a daze, thinking "what the hell", what kind of person has come to the dorm? How can they be so inconsiderate? Don't they know that disturbing others' sleep is a serious offense? Even Lin Bei, who has a very good temper, felt a bit annoyed and opened his eyes.
"Ah, it's moving! It's moving!"
"The long worm is indeed not dead, heaven, it really moved."
The sound came from above, Lin Bei subconsciously looked up at the top of his head, and then he was stunned. Was there something wrong with his own eyes?
Everything in sight was red, as if a layer of red film had been pasted over his eyes. It was extremely unclear, with only vague outlines visible, but it seemed like several people were staring in his direction.
Lin Bei still thought it was because he had just woken up.
"Hey, what are you doing? Can't let people sleep?" Lin Bei couldn't help but ask, and then he was horrified, because although he had the idea of speaking, he couldn't say a word, his throat seemed to be blocked.
Under great shock, Lin Bei discovered another strange thing on his body.
Firstly, what was beneath him was icy cold, not a warm bed. Secondly, his own body felt soft and weak, subconsciously, Lin Bei lowered his head, suddenly startled out of his wits.
"My goodness!!"
Lin Bei saw a large snake, as thick as an adult's waist, with black and white spots on its body the size of coins. The cold, slippery skin seemed to be sliding, and because it was too close, Lin Bei could even feel the chilly, eerie aura emanating from the snake's body.
Lin Bei wasn't too afraid of snakes, but that was on the condition that they didn't sleep with him. Now that Lin Bei was so close to the snake, how could he not be afraid? In a flash, Lin Bei's instincts made him want to dodge and avoid it, but afterwards, he calmed down.
Because Lin Bei saw that below his head was actually a giant snake's body, in other words, the giant snake's body grew out of Lin Bei's head, or to put it another way: "I've actually turned into a snake?"
Lin Bei was stunned by this fact, and then some information popped out of his brain. The information wasn't much, but with Lin Bei's intelligence, he had already digested and absorbed it all in the time it took to breathe. Then Lin Bei finally confirmed a fact: he had really turned into a snake.
"Cross-dressing parasite??"
Nowadays, the word "crossing" is not unusual. Being struck by lightning, being hit by a car, or even jumping off a building might make you cross over. Lin Bei had also seen such things happen, but he never thought that he would have a crossing day of his own. It's said that once you cross over, you've won the jackpot, but turning into a snake - what kind of thing is this?
The snake that was born attached to Lin Bei's memory is quite simple, from coming out of the shell it's just finding food, when small eating insects, growing up a bit then eating some mice and small birds, afterwards should be entering hibernation, then waking up and becoming him.
Although it was terrifying to turn into a snake, Lin Bei knew that such things were one-way, and he had never heard of anyone being able to return. The only thing to do after crossing over was to make the best of it, so Lin Bei was shocked for a while before finally suppressing the shock in his heart.
From above came the sound of people's voices, one after another without interruption.
"Did the long worm really move? I think it didn't move at all."
"It really moved, just moved its head a little while ago, and then it didn't move again."
"That must be it, it's not dead, just waking up from hibernation."
"Ah, these beasts will be quite ferocious if they've just woken up from hibernation. Quickly go move a few large rocks to press down on this well."
"Has the pavilion master been informed?"
"It has been notified."
Long worm? Long pavilion? What is this called in which place?
Lin Beibei lifted his head, and from the thickness of his body, Lin Beibei knew that this snake body was absolutely not small. It might be because it had just been attached, so controlling the snake body was a bit awkward, making this ordinary movement seem somewhat laborious.
In front of him was still a red blur, and subconsciously, Lin Bei thought of how snakes rely on their forked tongues to sense things around them, so he instinctively stuck out his snake tongue.
"Hiss...hiss...hiss"
As soon as the snake appeared, the pattern in front of Lin Bei suddenly became richer. If what he saw earlier was a splash ink painting, then what he saw now was almost indistinguishable from what he usually saw. Lin Bei even had a feeling that even if he closed his eyes, the scene around him could still form a clear image in his mind.
A gust of air carrying the smell of mud came in through his mouth, and instantly Lin Bei knew that this place was newly dug out, similar to a rural well, but now there's no water. He found himself standing at the bottom of the well, then he saw several people above the well.
These people have dark complexions, with unusually thick and powerful joints between their fingers, clearly visible as long-time laborers. However, they are dressed strangely, wearing a kind of hemp garment reminiscent of ancient TV dramas, with very long hair tied up on top of their heads, secured by what appears to be a wooden hairpin, giving Lin Bei a very mysterious feeling. At this moment, all these people are looking at him with a very complex gaze, full of reverence and fear.
The rustling footsteps came from all directions, these footsteps were still far away from the well, but Lin Bei 'saw' those people, dressed exactly like the ones by the well, no camera, no director.
"It seems I really traveled back in time." Lin Bei sighed silently in his heart, then heard a voice.
It's probably not quite right to say that he heard it, because he could feel the vibrations of the sound coming over, then being caught by the thick snake-like tongue in his mouth, and only then transmitted into his mind.
"Li Tingchang, slow down."
"Is there really a big long worm in the well?"
"Prefect, I, Lin San, wouldn't dare to deceive you. It's true! A huge one! I've entered the mountain dozens of times, but never saw a worm as big as that before. Prefect, look, everyone is at the well!"
"For three years there has been no rain, I wanted to dig a sweet well but instead dug out a long worm, could it be that heaven's calamity is not yet formed?" Li Tingchang said in a very low voice, Lin San should not have heard it, but Lin Bei did.
This Li Tingchang was at least a dozen or so zhang away from the well, but through the snake's senses, Lin Bei could 'see' his appearance. His looks were quite proper, probably around thirty years old, with some signs of fatigue on his face. The clothes on his body were better than those of the farmers, and he was wearing wooden shoes, which should be wooden clogs, walking hastily towards him.
" Pavilion Master?" Lin Bei muttered this term.
Although not very familiar with history, Lin Bei knew that the position of Ting Chang should have existed since the Warring States period and was continuously used afterwards, seemingly until the Han Dynasty. The famous Han Gaozu Liu Bang was once a Ting Chang, so at this time he should be in the Warring States and Han Dynasties time period?
The Warring States period is not very familiar to Lin Bei, but the Three Kingdoms are a bit more familiar due to the influence of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", however, it's limited to some names like Zhao Yun, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.
"If only I could travel back to the Three Kingdoms."
Lin Bei thought for a moment, then couldn't help but laugh. What about the Three Kingdoms now? He was no longer human, but a snake. Did he still want to lead a rebellion? Thinking of this, Lin Bei suddenly felt at a loss. As a snake, what could he do now?
