Chapter Fifty-Seven
I took a glance at the open space in front of the battlefield, there was no unusual place, only the corpses of the enemy soldiers were scattered all over the grass. The morning wind blew and the thatched grass swayed east and west, while those corpses seemed to be hiding and seeking like playing hide-and-seek with me on the grass...
Pfft! Hiding from the cat?
Am I playing hide and seek with ghosts?
Bad luck!
I looked carefully around the lawn several times but didn't find any suspicious places, so I slightly lowered my head and gave Wang Kechang a signal with my eyes.
Wang Kechang nodded in agreement. The cat crouched down and ran to another position, holding the submachine gun in its hand, slowly poking out from under the military cap...
There is an advantage to having an assistant here. If the enemy sniper's camouflage level is very high, it means that even with good observation skills, it's hard to discover him. At this time, someone needs to lure the snake out of its hole. This person is naturally Wang Kechang.
However, I was disappointed to find that the Vietnamese sniper did not fall for it.
I don't know what problem the Vietnamese sniper discovered, maybe it was the red five-star on Wang Kechang's military cap that was too obvious, or maybe it was the military cap that would float in the wind when he used the gun stock to push it up... In short, no matter how Wang Kechang adjusted his position, there was no gunshot.
Is it over after a Vietnamese sniper fires just one shot?
No! I believe he's still in front of me, because he's a sniper from the 316A Division of the Viet Minh, a top-notch unit. If he only took out two small soldiers and then retreated, his comrades would laugh at him.
Suddenly I felt a strange feeling: what was the purpose of this Vietnamese sniper coming here? What was his goal?
To say... if this Vietcong soldier was using a sniper rifle to suppress our counterattack firepower, that would be normal. Or maybe he came up here to take out a few of our officers, that's also normal. But the problem is, he's targeting ordinary soldiers... However, as it happens, our military uniforms are all the same from officers to ordinary soldiers, so even if he wanted to target officers, he probably wouldn't be able to hit them anyway.
So this Vietnamese sniper had only one purpose, which was to use the wounding of our military personnel to undermine the morale of our army, in order to facilitate the next charge by the Vietnamese army.
So I understood two things: one is that this Vietnamese sniper was too arrogant, coming alone to fight against our whole company, and he even believed that he could deal a blow to our morale with just himself. The other thing... is that the Vietnamese army had already made preparations for another charge.
Only when I thought of this did my heart finally calm down a bit.
To be honest, just now knowing that the opponent is a sniper from the Vietnamese army's ace unit, the pressure suddenly increased a lot. Although I had dealt with snipers before and they were all very fierce, as someone said: "A person's reputation is like a tree's shadow", I was intimidated by that reputation and shadow.
But now, knowing that the enemy is overconfident to this extent, I'm actually a bit more at ease. Isn't that right? I've heard Old Head say before: "As a sniper, you have to face your battlefield with an objective attitude, neither too optimistic nor too pessimistic, neither underestimating the enemy nor fearing the enemy..."
At that time, I was young and ignorant, so I would stupidly ask: "What should we do then?"
The old man casually gave me a burst of laughter: "Just like you playing a fighting game, got it!"
At that time, I listened to this and didn't think much of it, like playing a game... It was too simple! But now that I've really stepped onto the battlefield, I realize it's not simple at all!
My gaze passed through the sight, inch by inch, inspecting the position in front of me, trying to make myself treat the battlefield in front of me with a normal heart, and then my brain cells began to become active.
Based on my previous combat experience in the bushes, if an enemy sniper wants to successfully snipe our soldiers, he definitely can't hide deep in the bushes. The reason is simple: the dense grass will block his line of sight, and this has nothing to do with whether the gun or vision is good or not - even the best vision and the best gun cannot achieve X-ray vision.
Of course, you can also hide in a deep place and stand up like an ordinary soldier to shoot, but that will undoubtedly expose your position.
So I quickly locked onto a target several meters away at the edge of the bushes.
I could only barely see a dozen or so meters in front of me in the thick grass, so my search range was greatly reduced. What made me a bit annoyed was that after searching several times, nothing was found except for a few corpses on the grass...
At this time, a rustling sound suddenly came from the dark grass thicket. In the first moment, I aimed my rifle at the direction where the sound was coming from. Only two hundred meters in front of me, the grass waves were undulating irregularly. My heart was thrilled, and I thought of pulling the trigger towards that target, but soon realized something was wrong.
A sniper wouldn't make such an obvious mistake, this is likely a trap set by the enemy or just a low-ranking soldier... So I restrained myself from pulling the trigger and released my index finger that was on it.
As expected, my idea was soon confirmed. Because the corpse in the bushes quickly got up and moved, of course, the corpse wouldn't move on its own, but someone had tied the corpse's feet and was pulling it backwards... It was just a small soldier who came to pull the corpse.
However, I endured it, but Liang Lianbing couldn't... Suddenly a gunshot rang out, and a blood-curdling scream came from the bushes.
Then came a burst of cheers from the warriors: "Hit it, hit it! The third row leader was hit..."
"Bang!" A gunshot rang out, and the enemy sniper hiding in the dark struck again.
The warriors' cries suddenly stopped, and then someone shouted loudly: "Medic! Medic......" Apparently, someone else had fallen under the sniper's gun.
No gunfire, no white smoke!
I only saw a few blades of grass in the bushes move slightly, those moving blades of grass formed a white line in the grass waves, just like a stone flying quickly over the calm lake surface, leaving behind a vague trace. It was obviously the trajectory of a bullet...
So I found the opponent's hiding place, and I searched back along that trajectory, but what surprised me was... I found a "corpse".
He was certainly not a corpse, but the fresh blood and stains on his body, as well as his pose of falling to the ground like a dead man, deceived my eyes. At the same time, I didn't dare imagine that a sniper would dare to expose himself so "openly" in front of me.
He had been under my nose all along, and I had seen him several times already, but hadn't suspected a thing. Luckily I held back from firing just now, otherwise... As a sniper, he would of course recognize the distinctive sound of a sniper rifle, and then quickly aim his own rifle at me and fire a fatal shot...
My heart skipped a few beats at the thought, but fortunately none of this happened, and I discovered him one step ahead, so this battle was destined to end with his death.
I didn't think much, raised the rifle and aimed at the "corpse", the "corpse" seemed to have sensed my killing intent, and in the first moment it rolled over and tried to escape from my control...
But it was too late! I moved my index finger slightly, and a bullet flew out with a whistling sound and pierced his head.
A sniper cannot afford to make any mistakes, his mistake is just that he doesn't know I exist!
This time, the warriors did not dare to cheer or easily stick their heads out again. It wasn't until after a good while that they heard Wang Kechang shout: "This time it really hit!"
I didn't say much more and after a moment of silence I picked up my gun and ran in the direction of Liang Lianbing's troops...
It's clear that Lian Jianbing's shot exposed himself, and the Vietnamese sniper wouldn't let go of such a good target.
There is no doubt that taking out an enemy sniper is a feather in the cap of any sniper, and snipers play a crucial role on the battlefield.
As expected, Liang Lianbing was the one who got hurt, but fortunately not as badly as I had feared... He sat on a rock with blood all over his head, and a medic was dressing his wounds.
Seeing me coming over, Liang Lianbing couldn't help but smile wryly: "Second squad leader, you win again!"
"Are you badly hurt?" I asked.
Liang Lianbing shook his head: "It's just a scratch, fortunately I felt something was wrong when I pulled the trigger and withdrew my head to save my life, otherwise..."
"My endurance is still no match for yours!" Liang Lianbing patted my shoulder and said, "Comrade Yang Xuefeng, I didn't expect that you, who have been a soldier for a short time, would have such rich combat experience. Even we old veterans can't compare to you!"
I couldn't help but feel a twinge of embarrassment in my heart, what combat experience do I have? It's just that I remembered the words that old man said. Besides, if Liang Lianbing hadn't exposed himself and attracted the Vietnamese sniper to fire that shot, I might not have discovered the Vietnamese sniper until now!
The warriors suddenly burst into a cheer, each one excitedly came up to pat on the shoulder and hug. However, I didn't have a bit of joy in my heart.
It should be said that just now was only the god of luck once again favored, and if I didn't count wrong, excluding Liang Lianbing who was injured, our army has already had two soldiers fall under the sniper's gun. Two for one, this is simply not worth being happy or celebrating about.
Maybe someone will say our two are different from the enemy's one.
That's right, they are indeed different. Our two are ordinary soldiers, while the enemy has a sniper who has undergone long-term training. But in my eyes, lives should not be differentiated.
"Ugh..." Before the warriors' cheers had even died down, a burst of cannon fire echoed through the sky.
Just as I thought before, the Vietnamese army has made preparations for a charge.
However, this time's preparation was somewhat different from what the Vietnamese army had imagined. The Vietnamese army thought that they would use snipers to strike at our military's morale to some extent before launching an attack, but instead it was their own sniper who died at my hands.
So this time the artillery fire of the Viet Minh seemed to be just letting off steam, or perhaps trying to destroy the sniper rifles left behind by the Viet Minh snipers on the battlefield.
But whatever the reason for this artillery attack by the Vietnamese army, one thing is certain: another wave of their charge will come soon!
