Volume 1: Sudden Battlefield Chapter 19
As I crawled forward along the ditch, in order to avoid that dirty and smelly polluted water from rushing into my nostrils, I had no choice but to hold my head high up, which made me feel very uncomfortable.
In a little while, the miserable cries fell behind us, the machine gun sounds grew louder and louder, and occasionally we could still hear the Vietnamese shouting orders. At this time, I couldn't help but feel a little timid - was it really going to take an entire company of our men to deal with two highlands of Vietnamese troops? They were all seasoned veterans from the battlefield, while we seemed like a group of new recruits...
"Monitor! Monitor..." The small stone following behind me hastened a few steps, and softly called out from behind me: "Aren't we going to call a few more people? We only have eight people so far..."
So I knew that I was not the only one who felt guilty.
"What a load of nonsense!" I turned back with a scowl and muttered in a low voice, "If you're scared, then get out of here, stop embarrassing me!"
To be honest, Xiaoshi's idea is also what I hope for in my heart. But can I do that? Not to mention that the other warriors are in a mess and difficult to organize, this waterway is so small, and as soon as there are many people, it will be discovered by the Vietcong army. At that time, they just need to throw two hand grenades or use a machine gun to block us, and our only way out will be blocked...
So... for the sake of comrades' lives, the unit's interests and the country's honor, but more importantly, for my own life, I have no choice but to fight with all my might!
"Pass the order down!" To avoid being discovered by the enemy, I shouted to the small stone behind me: "Do not speak until you receive the order, do not expose your target unless absolutely necessary. Wait for my command before taking action!"
"Yes!" Xiaoshi replied and quickly passed down my order.
We continued to crawl forward for a while, and before long we approached the high ground where the Viet Minh were located. The bullets from the Viet Minh guns whizzed over our heads with a "ping ping" sound, I could even hear the shell casings jumping out of their gun barrels.
I raised my head and looked up, through the dense weeds, I found a Vietnamese soldier hiding in the bushes only ten meters away from me, holding an AK47 and firing wildly at our army. A surge of picking up the rifle, aiming at him and pulling the trigger rose in my heart, but I finally held back.
Because I knew that if I did, our position would be exposed in no time. And at this point we were right under the Viet Minh army, who seemed to need only a few hand grenades thrown into this ditch to solve their problem.
So I turned around and gestured to the warriors behind me, indicating that they should not rush forward, then beckoned them to continue crawling forward.
It's a lie to say that we weren't nervous, as the distance between us and the devils was only a few meters at most. If they shifted their attention back towards our army even slightly or heard an unusual sound in the water ditch, they would quickly discover our presence. And once we were discovered, there was only one outcome: death without a burial place.
But all this did not happen after all, because there were too many people waiting for them to pull the trigger on our side, and the sound of gunfire and artillery also covered up the sound of us crossing the water. They also had a light enemy mentality due to their successful ambush, so we passed in front of them under their noses in broad daylight and then hid on their flank...
The hill was covered with tall grass that was over a man's height, this kind of grass is everywhere in Vietnam, the Vietnamese seem to call it "芭茅草", people can hide several meters inside and can't be seen. This is also the reason why the enemy can hide here and ambush our army.
They just didn't know that China has an old saying: "Water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it." By the same token, the reeds that could serve as cover for them to ambush and kill our soldiers could also serve as cover for us to sneak up on their positions...
After crawling out of the ditch, we quietly drilled into the grass thicket on the flank of the Vietcong high ground. I pointed to the soldiers towards the Vietcong mountain top position and the soldiers nodded in understanding.
It is said that standing high and seeing far, the mountain top position is undoubtedly the most critical location on a high ground, as long as you occupy this place, you can control the line of sight with long-range weapons. Just like the Viet Minh we are dealing with, they arranged two heavy machine guns and several mortars on this mountain top position. All this can be seen from the crazy shooting of these weapons, so they naturally became our target...
As I climbed up the mountain ridge, shells fell around me from time to time, throwing layers of mud onto my body. Our artillery was desperately counterattacking, and in my heart, I couldn't help but pray that if we made it this far only to be killed by our own firepower, that would be a real injustice.
Fortunately, this scene did not happen, so it was those damn Vietnamese bastards who were unlucky!
It's not difficult for us to find the location of the Viet Minh in this jungle, as they are making a loud noise with their weapons, and I can even roughly judge their direction from the sound.
The warriors behind him waved their hands and rushed towards the mountain top with guns and waistbands.
The reeds were very dense and we crouched down to run, still able to hide well in them. So when we appeared in front of the Viet Minh mortar position and machine gun position... they were still firing guns and cannons at our position, it was several Vietnamese soldiers carrying ammunition who first discovered us, with a box of ammunition on their backs, mouths agape in shock staring at us, after a while before reacting to throw down the ammunition box and grab their guns.
But everything was already too late, with the sound of "bang bang..." several shots, those Vietnamese soldiers were knocked to the ground by us. At this time, the Vietnamese devils' artillery and heavy machine gunners finally reacted, casting their eyes towards our group of uninvited guests.
But who made them all artillerymen and heavy machine gunners, what are mortar men and heavy machine gunners? When they were fighting, they often had to disassemble the mortars and heavy machine guns at the fastest speed, then carry those mortar bases, barrels, etc. to transfer positions, and then quickly reassemble them for combat. So these troops often didn't have guns, a small portion of them did, but they were just handguns or folding submachine guns, and when firing artillery, they all threw them aside... At this time, as soon as they saw us, several quick-moving ones immediately went to grab the weapons placed on the side...
But how can we let these guys get away, the soldiers under my command didn't even need me to give orders, they all fired their weapons, rifles and charging shouts filled the air. Especially that squad with machine guns, as soon as they started firing, it was a continuous roar, bullets poured out like raindrops in a fan shape towards those Vietnamese troops...
Bullets flew back and forth, wails filled the air, and in no time, those Vietnamese soldiers were knocked to the ground by us. The entire mountain top position instantly turned into a bloody world. Occasionally, there were still a few Vietnamese soldiers who hadn't died yet rolling on the ground, letting out mournful groans. However, after going through that scene where the Vietnamese army was suppressed and slaughtered earlier, none of the soldiers showed any mercy towards these Vietnamese soldiers anymore. One by one, they walked forward without hesitation, "bang bang..." a few shots, and gave those injured Vietnamese devils a few more bullets.
On the battlefield, it's either you die or I perish, mercy and sympathy take a back seat!
"Who will fire the heavy machine gun?" I shouted at the soldiers.
"Me!" Only the machine gunner responded.
I grabbed the machine gun from his hand, pointing to the high ground across the road and ordered: "Immediately control the heavy machine gun, wherever there are enemies, shoot at them, don't consider anything else, got it?"
"Got it!" The machine gunner responded with a single word and didn't say anything else. He manipulated the heavy machine gun and fired at the high ground in front of him.
I am well aware that the greatest threat to us is not the Viet Minh on this high ground, although they are close to us, but at present, we and the main force are in a pincer movement on both sides of the mountain top position, and it's hard for them to even defend themselves, let alone launch an attack on us. Our greatest danger lies in the artillery positions and machine gun positions on the opposite high ground, once they realize that this high ground has fallen into our hands, they will soon turn their muzzles at us and unleash a fierce barrage...
At that time, I thought it would be very difficult for any of us to get out of this high ground alive.
Of course, this does not mean that we will not deal with the Vietnamese army's high ground. This is the time for us to take revenge. How could I let go of such a good opportunity? So I casually handed over the submachine gun in my hand to another soldier and loudly ordered: "Comrades! Kill me! Avenge our fallen brothers..."
"Fire!" The warriors shouted in unison and opened fire at the Vietnamese army.
Those Viet Minh hiding in the grass had all their camouflage facing forward, each exposing their backs to us. Moreover, from our vantage point on the mountain top, it was easy to spot the enemy firing at us from the grass, so a burst of gunfire only sent the grass flying and blood splattering everywhere. A few soldiers even threw hand grenades downhill, blowing up the Viet Minh with pitiful cries.
Almost at the same time, our main force, which had been suppressed by the Vietnamese army on the open ground, also realized that we had succeeded in a surprise attack. With one shout, they rushed up to the two highlands in groups. In an instant, the situation turned completely in favor of our army.
Seeing that the enemy army did not dare to fight, one by one they emerged from their hiding places and wanted to retreat. But we, who had already killed with bloodshot eyes, were not willing to let them go. Bullet after bullet chased after them as they walked, continuously knocking them to the ground...
I don't know how many people I've killed, all I know is that time and again I aimed at the enemy and pulled the trigger, time and again I reloaded... All I knew was to use my sniper rifle to vent my anger towards the enemy, my hatred for the Vietcong.
At that time, my idea was very simple. What the hell is country, people, party, making contributions... I didn't care at all and hadn't even thought about it. In my mind, there were only kill, kill, kill... Kill those damn devils, their mothers' ghosts, they killed so many of my comrades, I want you to pay back in blood!
