Chapter 10 Happiness Came So Suddenly

  Insufficient balance

The young woman in front of Wang Gang had her hair wrapped in a delicate yet understated headscarf, with sunglasses covering most of her face. However, the slender nose tip and pale skin below the glasses, as well as her red lips, made her look no more than 27 or 28 years old. Her hands, tightly clasped together, were long and icy cool.

Looking at the lifesaver who smiled at her but didn't speak, the young woman suddenly realized that wearing sunglasses was a bit impolite, and she quickly took them off to reveal an absolutely beautiful yet slightly pale face. Although it could be seen that the young woman had carefully made up before coming, the sudden event of yesterday still hadn't faded away so quickly.

"I am Wang Geng, a third-year Chinese student at West Point Military Academy. I apologize for keeping you waiting downstairs for so long. May I ask your surname, madam?" Wang Geng said with a smile as he invited the young woman to take a seat.

Nurse Kelly followed with a sullen face, and Wang Gang turned around to say, "Nurse Kelly, can you trouble yourself to bring this lady a cup of... coffee or hot tea?" Wang Gang asked the young woman in the chair.

"You can call me Mrs. Maikeduo, coffee, nurse, thank you!" The young woman put on her sunglasses again at some point, apparently unwilling to show her true face in front of anyone other than Wang Geng.

"Coffee! Got it, coming right up, Mrs. McDougall!" Carrie hummed slightly in her nose and turned to face Wang Gang with a calmer expression, "Gun, would you like tea instead?"

"Tea! Tea! Thanks, Kelly!" Wang Gang nodded helplessly as Kelly turned around and walked out the door. Wang Gang let out a sigh of relief, not understanding why there was such a strong animosity between these two women!

As soon as Kaylee left, young Mrs. McAdoo took off her sunglasses again and started sobbing without saying a word.

"I don't know how to thank you for your heroic actions yesterday, you are the lifesaver of Catherine and our whole family... Yesterday I was too careless... Catherine's hat was blown away by the wind... I didn't hold on tight, she went to pick up her hat and had already slipped into the water... I should have jumped in... But you know I don't know how to swim... The people on the riverbank were either old men or women and children"

Wang Gang saw that Mrs. McAdoo was already choked with sobs, so he comforted her in a soft voice while fetching a new towel from the bathroom to hand to her to wipe away her tears.

"Is Catherine your daughter's name? What a beautiful name. How is she doing now? The water was really cold yesterday, wasn't it?"

Wang Gang saw this young woman come alone and was a bit worried about the little girl he had rescued yesterday.

"Catherine's name was given by her grandfather, she is fine, just got a shock, so I didn't bring her today. Poor child, only four years old this year, almost lost her life because of my carelessness. You didn't save Catherine alone yesterday, you saved me and our whole family!"

Mrs. McAdoo lifted her head, grasped Wang Geng's hand tightly, and her beautiful face was intertwined with eyes and tears, revealing a heart of gratitude.

"Your daughter is only four years old? She looks like a big kid, but as pretty as a porcelain doll. I thought she was six or seven years old. We Chinese say that if you survive great difficulties, you will have good fortune later on. You should be happy now, ma'am. Crying too much can give you dark circles under your eyes." Wang Gen patted the young woman's hand gently to comfort her while quietly pulling his own hand back from her grasp.

This is ridiculous, this solitary and lonely person in the same room, next time being seen by Kelly that this dignified guy has already grabbed the hand of a stunning young woman, knowing that he was comforting his family member, but others would think that he was flirting with someone else's wife.

"You can call me Eleanor, Mr. Wang! Catherine is my dearest in this world, and the neighbors also affectionately call her porcelain doll. Mr. Wang, are you feeling better now? I'm so sorry about yesterday, as soon as Catherine's father received the news, he immediately sent someone to pick us up."

"My body is fine, it's just that I'm hiding from the news media here. Mr. McAdoo's daughter is worried, which is completely understandable. Besides, hospitals are not a place to stay if you don't have to, and I'm only staying because I have no choice - if I didn't stay here, I'd have to go back to the military academy... You know, Mrs., life in the military academy is still quite rigid and dull... At least when I want to see you, I don't want it to be so convenient!" Wang Gen said frankly.

The door creaked again, and before Wang Gang could get up to open it, Kelly pushed the door open with her back, holding a tray in both hands, and turned around to come in. Wang Gang hurried over to help, and the nurse glanced at Mrs. McAdoo sitting in the chair, this woman who was not inferior to herself in appearance, subtly making Kelly feel a little discouraged.

"Wang Geng, the doctor said that what you need most now is rest. You've been going non-stop from the moment you woke up this morning and haven't stopped at all. If you faint again, who knows when you'll wake up!"

Kai Li muttered threateningly to Wang Geng while aggressively puffing out her chest at the young woman, then turned and left in a huff.

Staying here as a light bulb girl, she's afraid of losing her dignity and can't help but quarrel with that woman. To say the least, this animosity is so overwhelming that even Kelly herself doesn't understand how it came about!

Mrs. Macduff watched the beautiful nurse's performance, of course, and it was clear that the hospital room wasn't the best place to communicate with her lifesaver. After Kaylee left, Mrs. Macduff stood up and said softly,

"Mr. Wang, you can wake me up more than anyone else, Catherine is also clamoring to come and see this uncle in person, no matter how we repay your lifesaving grace, it's not too much! My husband has been busy attending meetings these past few days and couldn't get away, he originally wanted to personally come and thank you!"

"Madam, you don't have to worry about it. Look at Catherine, although she unfortunately fell into the water and got a shock, I not only rescued her but also got the title of Honorary Citizen of New York. The world is so big, New York is so big, and at that time I was there and could save Catherine, obviously it's God's will. You don't have to worry about it too much!"

Mrs. Macduff nodded slightly, "What you said is right, you are the angel sent by God to save Catherine and our whole family, I don't know when you will be discharged from the hospital, my husband and I want to invite you to come to our home as a guest, you must come!"

Wang Gang touched his own head and thought to himself, "I don't have that much time to accompany you and your family, I have a lot of things to take care of every minute, and the matter of getting in touch with President Wilson is still unclear."

Mrs. MacArthur said, "You don't have to worry about the West Point Military Academy side of things, my husband is familiar with several past principals and your grandfather wants to meet Catherine's lifesaver too, but they are both busy in Washington D.C. right now, so they can't come to New York to visit you for the time being."

"Is your husband working in Washington?" Wang Geng's heart skipped a beat when he heard this.

"We have relatives and homes in both New York and Washington, but after getting married four years ago I've been living with my husband in Washington. This time I came to New York to visit my sister," said Mrs. McAdu.

"May I ask, is your husband working for the US government in Washington? You know, I have a good friend couple living in Washington too, and I spent last Christmas at their place!" said Wang Gang with a smile.

"Uh..." Mrs. MacArthur hesitated for a moment, speaking softly, "My husband works in the cabinet, I hope you can understand his reluctance to make a big fuss about it. You're a West Point graduate, you also know that the issue of whether America should go to war in Europe has been bothering them for a long time!"

"Is your husband a cabinet member?! May I be so bold as to ask your husband's name?" Wang Kang was overjoyed upon hearing this, it was like someone had handed him a pillow while he was dozing off. His brain was racing at full speed but for the moment, he couldn't recall which member of Wilson's cabinet had the surname McAdoo, so he simply asked honestly.

Mrs. Macduff's expression was complex, wanting to speak but stopping herself. The young woman walked to the door and listened, the corridor outside was quiet, apparently no one was there.

She turned around, biting her lip and said, "You are Catherine's lifesaver, our family shouldn't have any secrets from you. My husband is William Gibbs McAdoo, the Secretary of the Treasury!"

My goodness! What a McAdoo, it turns out to be McAdoo! William Gibbs McAdoo! He served as Secretary of the Treasury in Wilson's cabinet from 1913-1918 and so on!

"Madam, you said your name is Ailino... then... then... You are... You are..." Wang Gang was so shocked that he couldn't speak for a moment!

"Yes, before I married my husband, my full name was Eleanor Randolph Wilson! Thomas Woodrow Wilson is my father, and I am his little daughter!" Eleanor nodded.

President of the United States Thomas Woodrow Wilson!

Wang Gang felt that the distance between himself and the God of Fortune had never been closer than at this moment!
